ASTLEY Bridge’s cricketers saved the best for last as they triumphed in the Bolton League’s Anthony Axford Indoor Trophy.

Bridge hit the heights with a 41-run victory over Tonge in the final – their total of 167-5 being the best score of this year’s competition at Bolton School.

The team of Rick Northrop, Will Halton, Stephen Shepley, Chris McGuinness, David Cryer and Craig Haslam proved too strong for their Castle Hill rivals.

But the individual honours went to Tonge skipper, Nigel Partington, whose knock of 78 in his side’s reply of 126 was one of the highest-ever scores in the history of the 12-over competition and earned him the man-of-the-match award.

Northrop (49), Halton (41no), Shepley (25) and McGuinness (22) put the final beyond Tonge after Bridge had beaten the holders Kearsley in the first semi-final.

Kearsley batted first and posted 117-4 – skipper Pete Morris top-scoring with 37 not out and Jordan Thornley contributing 35no. But Northrop and Shepley (both 25no) and McGuinness (23no) helped Bridge to 119-3.

Tonge beat Eagley in the second semi-final, setting a winning total of 126-5 in the face of some impressive bowling by Steve Foster (3-21).

Alex Rodzoch (27), Chris Gregory (26no) and Dave Bath (25) made the big contributions in a total that proved too much for Eagley, who managed just 105-4 in reply, Danny Counsell top-scoring with an unbeaten 30.
